Cheney’s War Rational Suicided
The torturee who brought the Bush Administration the much-needed - if untrue - rational to kill Saddam Hussien, several hundred thousand Iraqis and thousands of US troops is dead.
Conveniently, he killed himself with his bedsheets in a Libyan prison just as the investigation into his connection with Cheney and Rumsfeld’s use of torture to find links between Saddam and Al Queda was gathering steam. When interviewed last month by Human Rights Watch all he would say is “Where were you when I was being tortured in American jails?”
Lawrence Wilkerson, aide to then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, says Al-Libi was tortured in the spring of 2002, long before the Justice Department memos justifying torture were produced.
Two important things come out of these revelations. We tortured prisoners not to avoid future terrorist attacks, but to start a war. We tortured before the weak fig leaf of the Justice Department memos were written.
Of course the biggest issue of all remains - we tortured. Luckily, this story isn’t going away and every week gains new legs. We must convict those involved.
